Wow, I've not been keeping up with my writing here at all. My apologies! It's been a busy summer and I've just not been thinking about my website much lately. Things have been busy and not— just the ebb and flow of life I suppose. The biggest things I can think of: my dad is wrestling with cancer and my eldest is off to college. Wow, how time flies.
We did, however, manage to make it out to Shaky Knees again this year. My 15 year old really wanted to see Pierce the Veil so we took them to their first ever music festival! Generally we had a really good time. The weather was scorching, but we brought plenty of sunscreen and our hydration backpacks so it was manageable enough. Saturday afternoon, we were making our way towards the front-ish part of the crowd for Pierce the Veil after Peach Pit finished their set and... thunderstorms started rolling in and they evacuated the festival. What a bummer! Wading, soaking wet, through water on our way to the Marta station amidst cracks of thunder wasn't the most fun I've had at a festival, that's for sure. Still, we had a good time at the festival and we'll try and take our 15 year old to another Pierce the Veil show next time they come through Atlanta or some other nearby city.
In other news, I got my hands on a SuperStation One, a MiSTer FPGA-based retrogaming console in the shape of a PlayStation One.
It took a few days to get set up correctly with ROMs, system BIOSes, and all the other bits and bobs, but now that it's up and running I've been having an absolute blast playing a bunch of old retro games.
My friend has been collecting old CRT TVs from Facebook Marketplace and had a spare in his shed which he gave to me when I mentioned I was going down the MiSTer rabbit hole. So now I've got it set up in our guest bedroom and I've been having such a good time with it. Got a pair of 8bitdo M30 controllers and I've just been loving gaming on this thing. Sega Saturn, SNES, Neo Geo, Nintendo 64— you name the retro console and this SuperStation One can probably play it.
After a week or so of being wildly ADHD in my exploration of all these old game systems' catalogues, I've settled down to play through Vagrant Story on the PlayStation. I'm about twelve hours into my first playthrough and just constantly wowed by how fun it is, the story, and most of all the art direction.
I could wax on and on about the SuperStation One, but the short of it is that it's by far the best gaming purchase I've made. Playing retro games on a CRT has been keeping me off of the internet and focused on gaming and it's just been a delightful breath of fresh air in these interesting times we live in.
But, I digress. Noon approaches and I really should get to mowing the lawn (hopefully for the last time this season). Flesh & Blood's 100th Calling in Atlanta is coming up next weekend so I don't have another time to do it!
