wow, bicycling is awesome.
tuesday, july 4th, 2023.
I'm back to the regular routine now that vacation is over, which includes packing my panniers for work, hopping on the bicycle, riding to work, showering, and then enjoying a nice cup of coffee and the afterglow of exercise as I settle into the day.
I was riding home from work yesterday evening and I realized something— I am absolutely loving getting back into bicycling to work. This feels like what I'm meant to be doing. Feeling the wind on my face, being all persnickety about how I'm packing my bike, racking up the miles and not burning gasoline in the process. Every day a miniature adventure.
The bicycle infrastructure in my city is practically non-existent, but I've still found a relatively safe way to bike for my commute. The central part of the city, which I ride through, is made up of quiet residential streets built in an era before the cul-de-sac became popular in the United States. I do have to ride a few miles on a highway, but it's got a very large shoulder that's wider than a typical bike lane.
Anyway— this whole bicycling business suits me pretty well. I'm nearing my 40s, and I hope I'll be able to keep doing this sort of thing into my 60s. It's so nice to get regular cardio exercise for basically free, while enjoying my environment and experiencing the city I live in more intimately than if I were behind the glass and steel of an automobile.
Until next time, be well!
