hat & ferry.

We're on day 2 of a vacation to see my folks up in North Carolina. It's been real nice relaxing in the "down east," as they call it here. Today, we visited Ocracoke Island by ferry. It's a two hour journey each way, which suits me just fine— I actually enjoy the mandatory down time, especially on vacation!
I'm using tethered Wi-Fi on my cell phone to edit this writing from the middle of the sound. How friggin' cool is that? On the trip here I read some of Martha Wells' All Systems Red, which my friend Abby recommended. It's quite the page turner! I'll probably finish it today or tomorrow. I'm already looking forward to reading more of the series.
I'm really enjoying taking a week off and taking it leisurely up here on the coast. The weather has been pretty great— breezy and in the mid 80s. Comfortable, but the mosquitoes are discouraged by the wind. We'll probably go out on my dad's boat and do a little clamming, which my older daughter looks forward to every time we come up. I get to take my partner out into the mud and put them to work, too, so I'm also quite excited about that! ;)
While we were on the island, I snagged a Wallaroo Palm Beach hat, seen in the image above. I love hats like these. I have another similar hat but I've worn it mowing the yard and it looks the part— sweat, grass stains, and a few dirt spatters. So I figured I'd get another that I won't wear doing yard work. What can I say? I adore a comfortable outdoor hat!
My partner and kids are coloring in a coloring book right now and I have the biggest smile on my face. This is such a nice way to spend a vacation. I do hope we'll have many more years of these, but I'll cherish this year's summer vacation with everything I've got.
Until next time, be well! :)
